Arceus and the Jewel of Life discussion
Dec 8th, 2009 at 6:54am

So, I'm guessing everyone has seen the 12th Pokemon movie now?

Jesus Christ.... 12 movies.  Hell of a thing for a fad.

I found it quite enjoyable, I especially liked how it played into the previous two movies.  One of my favorite parts of it was that Marcus pretty much dies at the end of it, indicating that Arceus went out of its way NOT to save him, since it saved everyone else.  That was kind of cool, in my opinion.

A ton more Team Rocket in this movie too, which is always a bonus, especially how they mistook a bunch of crappy kitchen junk for ancient treasures while Jesse was using the scepter containing THE JEWEL OF LIFE as a walking stick because she was knackered.  The ending with Damos leaving a message for everyone was really cool too.

Overall, one damned enjoyable movie!  So what did you think?

Loved the movie, loved the review guide. Cheesy

And yeah...I'm curious as to what Arceus really is, too. In the games, he apparently made the whole Universe, not just the Earth and Sinnoh...but it doesn't indicate that he's omniscient, or even immortal.

So...I'm guessing he's kinda like Zeus?  Huh

And sorry to burst your bubble, but...I don't think Marcus died. I think it showed in the end credits that he went back to work under Damos...from what my memory and Bulbapedia tells me.

I'd have to check the end credits again, from the actual movie itself we see everyone else specifically being saved, but all we see of Marcus is a close-up on his headpiece lying at the bottom of the hole in the temple, which suggested to me he'd fallen to his doom.

The axis thing suggests that Arceus at least made the "worlds" of Dialga and Palkia, which are essentially the "worlds" of Time and Space, which suggests the entirety of existence pretty much.  Giratina seems to be something different, but it was clearly inferior to Arceus, which was never troubled by it but which managed to take more damage than Dialga or Palkia could.  Arceus clearly isn't omniscient though, as it didn't know who Ash was and because it took time for the correction in history to filter through to the present and register with present day Arceus.

Whatever it is, it's beyond anything else in the world we've seen so far at least.

Arceus - God
Giratina - Death/Satan
Dialga - God of Time
Palkia - God of Space
Ho-Oh - Avatar of Rebirth/Phoenix
Darkrai - Master of Dreams/Nightmares
Groudon - Master of Land
Kyogre - Master of Sea
Rayquaza - Master of the Sky
Mew - The "first" Pokemon
Then various spirits of wind and air and the sea and lightning and fire and stuff, genies that grant wishes etc, etc

Not to mention those cybernetic, seizure-inducing, magical computer antivirus creatures.  Lips Sealed

Anyway, I'm watching Jewel of Life for the first time right now (like, right now). From what I've seen so far, it's not bad.

Man I loved this movie! The part that I loved most was the flashback between Arceus and Damos. It just felt so ...biblical in a way.

What I really liked was the fact that they actually came right out and stated that Arceus created our world (in Pokemon myth of course) rather then pulling a 4Kids and just saying something about how it made its own world only or something. Sure, it wasn't as open as it could have been, but at least it tied into the game mythology well. I also liked how Ash used the D-WORD - he told Arceus not to die, and we almost never hear of characters dying since America seems to think kids need to avoid that topic or something. :/

And I don't know why, but I just LOVE the scene where the Cyndaquil and Chikorita work as kitchen slaves. XD

Plus the effects were FANTASTIC.

Yeah, that was something noteworthy. But then again, if six-year-olds are watching the Harry Potter movies (particularly the fourth one), I wouldn't be that surprised.

For a Pokemon movie, there was a lot less BS this time around, which I liked. I'm now rewatching some segments again just for kicks.

Actually, that'd be hilarious. Can you imagine what sort of movie that'd be?  Cheesy I daresay it'd have a lot of their million-dollar-Pikachu-catching machines being put to waste, not to mention a bunch of slapstick humor.

personally I feel that pokemon has evolved from fad to hobby by now.

So I've just finished reading the guide, and what I find interesting is the past methods of controling/ capturing pokemon. These guys were into a bondage thing restricting and controling their pokemon, where as if you look at Sammy from the celebi movie he had like an early version of a pokeball.

also Arceus was all up in the hizz-ouse smacking bitches.

For a Pokemon movie, this was pretty deep. It actually gave a lot to think about, and actually went beyond being just some ploy to get people to buy HeartGold and SoulSilver. (After all, Arceus, Spiky-Ear, and the Johto Starters appearing in one movie is hardly a coincidence).

And to think it all started with a crack-baby named Ash Ketchum, bent with the single goal on becoming the greatest Pokemon Master, to catch all 150 of those "magical creatures."

(You can't get more generic than "magical creatures." At least the writers had some ingenuity when dealing with the past's perception of Pokemon. But still -- "Magical Creatures"?!)

Looking back, it's going to be kinda hard for the writers to top this in the next movie. I mean, where do you go when you've got a Pokemon God? What's next for Pokemon in the next "newly-discovered" region?

And how many legends is Ash going to be a part of?

God, I really enjoyed this movie.

Ash, Brock and Dawn get hold of two bags of Grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half-full of cocaine and a whole galaxy of multicolored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers.... also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of Budweiser, a pint of raw ether, and two dozen amyls and go on a roadtrip to Viridian City.

This needs thought. We're pretty far in so far, and haven't seen a single sign of a new region so far. The third movie of a region has shown new Pokemon so far, like Latios and Latias in the 5th, and Lucario in the 8th. Will this mean that there will be no new region? Will they just repeat old regions? Or do they keep the foreshadowing to a bare minimum this time? Time will tell...

If they pulled a Team Rocket centred movie, that would indeed be epic. They have Team Rocket centred episodes, so...here's hopin'!

I'm also rather chuffed that no Christian organizations have spoken out against this movie yet, for revealing 'paganist' ideas or whatever crap they think it shows. Or has there been? If someone can clarify that, that would be cool.

And no new region...naah, pretty sure there will be. Pokemon locations have a trend of copying real world locations within Japan, and they've yet to cover (Kanto = Kanto region, Johto = Kansai region, Hoenn = Kyushu, Sinnoh = Hokkaido). Following this trend, I'm guessing the next region will be based off of Shikoku.

Yeah, I've been noticing that too. Like, normally by now we see at least SOME indication of a new generation. Maybe they're just putting waaay more effort into HeartGold and SoulSilver then they did FireRed and LeafGreen? :/

Eh, that sounds like they have absolutely no ideas right now but continue to push the whole "thousands that inhabit this world!" thing to keep people from losing interest while they scrabble for new material.

...But that's just me. XD

They need to make an bug type Legendary,or one of the common house fly that bugs Ash and steals all of his food.
